Root Canal Retreatment

We provide specialized care to address complications from a previous root canal, relieve discomfort, and restore your tooth’s health and function.

About Root Canal Retreatment

Root canal treatments are designed to save your natural tooth and relieve pain. In most cases, they are very successful and last a lifetime. However, just like with any medical or dental procedure, there are times when the tooth may need additional care. The main reason this happens is because some bacteria remain inside the tooth or find a way back in. This doesn’t mean your original treatment “failed” — it simply means your tooth needs a little more attention to ensure it stays healthy.

There are a few common reasons why bacteria may persist inside a tooth:

  • Delay in placing the final crown or filling
After your first root canal, it’s very important to protect the tooth with a permanent restoration. If this crown or filling is delayed, saliva can seep in and reintroduce bacteria.

  • New decay around the tooth
Even after treatment, the natural part of your tooth is still vulnerable to cavities. If decay develops, it can open a pathway for bacteria to enter the root canal system again.

  • Hidden canal spaces
Teeth sometimes have extra canal spaces that are very small or difficult to see. If one of these wasn’t treated initially, bacteria may remain in that area.

  • Canal not fully cleaned the first time
Root canal systems are complex and can vary from person to person. In rare cases, a treated canal may not have been thoroughly cleaned, allowing bacteria to linger.

The Good News: Retreatment Can Help

If your tooth needs retreatment, it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. It also doesn’t mean you’ll lose your tooth. Retreatment is simply a second opportunity to carefully clean and seal the canals, giving your tooth the best chance to last for many years to come.

Our goal is always to save your natural tooth whenever possible, and retreatment is a safe and effective way to restore health, comfort, and peace of mind.
